Evidence-Based Insomnia Treatment: CBT-Insomnia Foundations

One-day online CBT-I foundations workshop for health professionals with intermediate CBT skills. This workshop will outline the importance of assessing and treating insomnia in healthcare settings, providing participants with practical skills to implement the basics of CBT-Insomnia. Discussion, video, case examples, and resource suggestions will be used to support learning.

This workshop will help participants to:

  1. Appreciate the importance of sleep health, focusing on the impact of insomnia on mental health
  2. Understand the evidence for the effectiveness of CBT-I and the impact of CBT-I on comorbid health conditions
  3. Understand the regulation of sleep (two-process model)
  4. Be aware of common sleep myths and facts and deliver psychoeducation about sleep and insomnia
  5. Conduct a sleep assessment (interview, sleep logs, objective measures of sleep)
  6. Formulate insomnia according to the Three Barriers to Sleep
  7. Implement key behavioural strategies in CBT-I
  8. Be aware of the impact of cognitive maintaining factors in insomnia and implement simple cognitive strategies

    Speaker Profile

    *Dr. Melissa Ree

    BSc (Hons), MPsych (Clinical), PhD

    Dr. Ree has over 20 years’ experience in the field of behavioural sleep medicine, which began during her postdoctoral fellowship at Oxford University. She is a practising senior clinical psychologist and director of Sleep Matters (https://www.sleepmattersperth.com.au/), a large clinic in Perth, Australia, that treats patients with insomnia and other sleep difficulties. Melissa holds expertise in the development, delivery, and evaluation of insomnia interventions, and in the supervision of clinical psychologists and psychological researchers. She also holds a research position at The University of Western Australia. Across her roles, Melissa has published peer-reviewed papers, book chapters, and a clinical textbook (Delivering CBT for Insomnia in Psychosis A Clinical Guide), and has been central to the development of treatment guidelines and protocols for insomnia. Much of Melissa’s research focuses on the important role sleep plays in mental health and the impact that optimising sleep can have on health and well-being.
