Outsmarting Anxiety Talk: 3 mind-body paths to peace

We used to hear that stress is driven by our instinct to fight against or flee from something dangerous. When the body gets alarmed, the heart has to beat faster, the muscles tighten up, etc. All these stress reactions pile up over time and become anxiety. Today our anxiety is many times more complicated. For example, even high performers in the workplace have hidden worries and shame from their “imposter syndrome,” and painful bloating, constipation, and diarrhea (irritable bowel syndrome) may have no full medical explanations other than chronic anxiety. Children suffer from panic attacks, and both generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are among the top mental health challenges in Singapore.

Outsmarting Anxiety Workshop: 3 mind-body paths to peace

Many people experience worries and anxiety as something that just happen to them. It feels to them like there’s nothing they can do to escape from such an emotional trap. The more they try to stop worrying, the more they’re entangled in the worries. This often leads to high blood pressure, headache, underperformance in their studies and at work, and frustrating conflicts in their marital and family life.

With the ongoing digital revolution, demands on students, pressure from social media, and job and economic uncertainties from global unrest, the distress we face is so much more complex than those in past generations. Therefore, we also need a more sophisticated roadmap to navigate through worries, fears, and anxiety.
