Ycare: Walking in their Shoes

Suicide is the leading cause of death for those aged 10 to 29 in Singapore. In 2019, 71 persons aged 20 to 29 took their own lives.

Each youth suicide could have been prevented. Often, the person just wanted a way out of his or her pain and despair but had felt helpless and hopeless. As a community, we can do more to prevent the next youth suicide.

Ycare: Walking in their Shoes is a new community outreach programme that aims to empower young persons (age 18 to 25 years) with mental health challenges to recover and live well and prevent youth suicide. Scheduled to be launched in September, it aims to reach out to more than 1,000 young persons by end 2021.

Ycare: Walking in their Shoes has received a $20,000 grant from the Tote Board Mental Health Strategic Initiative. This grant will be used for the production of a new physical exhibit and event-related expenses.

To increase the impact of Ycare: Walking in their Shoes, Shan You will be partnering with the Singapore Repertory Theatre to use arts as a vehicle to create authentic conversations on mental health and suicide and bring communities together. It will be a sensory experience created using 5 verbatim stories incorporated into a ‘pop up’ immersive exhibition.

We seek your support in making this project a reality. We are fundraising S$15,000 to enable the creation of this programme. This fundraising project is supported by the Tote Board Enhanced Fund-Raising (EFR) Programme that provides dollar for dollar matching to cover the programme expenses. All donations are eligible for tax-deductible relief of 2.5 times of the donated amount. Any excess funds raised will go towards expanding the scale and reach of Walking in their Shoes.

We know that together we can engage young people in this vital conversation; highlighted in a safe and sensitive way through storytelling to punctuate the importance of speaking up, discussing, and shining a spotlight on the destigmatisation of mental health issues in Singapore.

We ask all donations to be made to Ycare: Walking in their Shoes Fundraising Project and donated directly to Shan You (Block 5 Upper Boon Keng Road #02-15 Singapore 380005). You may also wish to donate via our fundraising page: https://www.giving.sg/shanyou/ycare_walking_in_their_shoes
