Motivational Interviewing

We offer workshops in Motivational Interviewing. People often have mixed feelings about making behavioural changes in their lives. Motivational Interviewing is an approach that has gained wide recognition among professionals and practitioners as an effective way of interacting with clients, particularly helpful for use in settings where there is resistance to or an ambivalence to change.

Motivational Interviewing has been proven effective in improving client lifestyle and health outcomes. It is a collaborative, person-centered form of directive guiding to elicit and strengthen motivation for change. MI originally developed to work with helping people with addiction problems, is now being applied widely in primary health care, coaching, criminal justice, vocational, hospitals, and mental health settings. Its effectiveness has been tested empirically.

For five years now, Shan You Counselling Centre has been providing training for Motivational Interviewing conducted in person by a member of our Advisory Board, Dr Joel Porter. Joel is a member of the Board of Directors for the International Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT).

We offer Introductory, Intermediate and Masters workshops for Motivational Interviewing, as well as courses specifically designed for applying MI with particular clientele groups or settings. Participants will learn the fundamental spirit and principals of MI, the language of change, as well as the core counselling skills of the approach.
